How to Convince Someone to Vote September 30, 2008

In my opinion, if I’m not sure you are going to vote like me or you have no idea what is going on in the world, I’m not going to try to get you to vote! Please, if you don’t know what you are doing, don’t vote! First find out what is going on around you! Hitler was elected to save Germany from corrupt politicians. Mao had millions of supporters who did not figure out that he was a genocidal, fascist, dictator until it was too late! Encouraging the ignorant to vote is wrong! First they must know what is really going on.

Voter turnout has been decreasing in established democracies around the world over the past 40 years.[1] So what can you do, as an individual, to reverse this trend? Social scientists say that there are four main reasons people vote (or don’t vote) and they all affect each other like this: PB + D > C.[2]
- P = probability that an individual’s vote will affect the outcome of an election
- B = perceived benefit of the outcome
- D = democracy, civic duty; immediate gratification from the act of voting itself
- C = time, effort, and financial cost involved in voting
Basically, all the pros (P, B, D) need to outweigh the cons (C). When you’re talking to someone who isn’t planning on voting, you have a much better chance of convincing them to cast their ballot by making a strong case for the pros, and minimizing the cons. Here’s a practical guide to shifting the decision in favor of voting.

This article is right on! The federal government caused this and they are the only solution? It was the same during 9/11, they let us down and they don’t pay for it, no, they get more money, and more power.
When times were good, people wanted to maximize profits and they did things that would have worked as long as the real estate market kept going up. As soon as there was a slight down turn the house of cards started falling.
MEMPHIS – Here’s why Americans are revolting over the Wall Street rescue plan.
It’s not that taxpayers refuse to dig deeper to avoid an even bigger catastrophe.
It’s that they’re all puking over the notion that it’s the same bums in Washington who caused the mess by allowing it to fester who are now demanding their money to fix it.
It’s like the criminal who breaks into your house, hurts himself, then sues you for damages.
The reason Americans endure their federal government is that it is so inept and useless that it has little bearing on their everyday lives.
But in an economic meltdown like this, people don’t have a choice but to feel the fallout of their government’s incompetence. This is especially true in important swing states like Michigan, Ohio, Florida and Wisconsin, where factories are shuttering and neighborhoods are going into foreclosure.
And when taxpayers are suddenly told that the government will clip them for an additional $700 billion to clean up a mess it made, voters tend not to forget.
What is truly staggering is that neither of the presidential candidates has effectively reached voters on this issue. That’s why they remain jumbled at 50-50 in the polls.
Obama’s envisioned “joint statement” last week and McCain’s sniveling attempts to skip Friday’s debate were silly political posturing, as if a little handholding would do any good.
All these people do is hold hands, and that’s why they’ve gotten us into such a crisis. When they’re not clutching hands with strangers in airport bathroom stalls, they’re clutching hands with people even worse – each other.
Or they’re playing footsie with lobbyists and selling off America’s future for a few bucks and a cushy job after they leave office.
Both sides are equally despicable.
Republicans have never met anything they’re not willing to sell – so long as it belongs to someone else.
And Democrats have never met anything they’re not willing to give away – again, so long as it belongs to someone else.
That someone else these last few years, of course, has been the American taxpayer. And any poor schlub who thought he was investing in a solid stock market.

Mysterious New ‘Dark Flow’ Discovered in Space September 30, 2008
Posted by jerryh8391 in Educational.add a comment
We are looking for the answer to things that happened 6 billions years ago. That is long before the earth was a planet. As humans we want to know the answers but we may never make use of this information.
There are probably huge black holes floating outside the known universe. I think when a black hole reaches the mass of the universe it blows up into a big bang. There is probably a universe that our current big bang universe interferes with.
It spins the mind.
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/080923-dark-flows.html
As if the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy weren’t vexing enough, another baffling cosmic puzzle has been discovered.
Patches of matter in the universe seem to be moving at very high speeds and in a uniform direction that can’t be explained by any of the known gravitational forces in the observable universe. Astronomers are calling the phenomenon “dark flow.”
The stuff that’s pulling this matter must be outside the observable universe, researchers conclude.
When scientists talk about the observable universe, they don’t just mean as far out as the eye, or even the most powerful telescope, can see. In fact there’s a fundamental limit to how much of the universe we could ever observe, no matter how advanced our visual instruments. The universe is thought to have formed about 13.7 billion years ago. So even if light started travelling toward us immediately after the Big Bang, the farthest it could ever get is 13.7 billion light-years in distance. There may be parts of the universe that are farther away (we can’t know how big the whole universe is), but we can’t see farther than light could travel over the entire age of the universe.
Mysterious motions
Scientists discovered the flow by studying some of the largest structures in the cosmos: giant clusters of galaxies. These clusters are conglomerations of about a thousand galaxies, as well as very hot gas which emits X-rays. By observing the interaction of the X-rays with the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which is leftover radiation from the Big Bang, scientists can study the movement of clusters.
The X-rays scatter photons in the CMB, shifting its temperature in an effect known as the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) effect. This effect had not been observed as a result of galaxy clusters before, but a team of researchers led by Alexander Kashlinsky, an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., found it when they studied a huge catalogue of 700 clusters, reaching out up to 6 billion light-years, or half the universe away. They compared this catalogue to the map of the CMB taken by NASA’s Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellite.
They discovered that the clusters were moving nearly 2 million mph (3.2 million kph) toward a region in the sky between the constellations of Centaurus and Vela. This motion is different from the outward expansion of the universe (which is accelerated by the force called dark energy).
“We found a very significant velocity, and furthermore, this velocity does not decrease with distance, as far as we can measure,” Kashlinsky told SPACE.com. “The matter in the observable universe just cannot produce the flow we measure.”
Inflationary bubble
The scientists deduced that whatever is driving the movements of the clusters must lie beyond the known universe.
A theory called inflation posits that the universe we see is just a small bubble of space-time that got rapidly expanded after the Big Bang. There could be other parts of the cosmos beyond this bubble that we cannot see.
In these regions, space-time might be very different, and likely doesn’t contain stars and galaxies (which only formed because of the particular density pattern of mass in our bubble). It could include giant, massive structures much larger than anything in our own observable universe. These structures are what researchers suspect are tugging on the galaxy clusters, causing the dark flow.
“The structures responsible for this motion have been pushed so far away by inflation, I would guesstimate they may be hundreds of billions of light years away, that we cannot see even with the deepest telescopes because the light emitted there could not have reached us in the age of the universe,” Kashlinsky said in a telephone interview. “Most likely to create such a coherent flow they would have to be some very strange structures, maybe some warped space time. But this is just pure speculation.”
Surprising find
Though inflation theory forecasts many odd facets of the distant universe, not many scientists predicted the dark flow.
“It was greatly surprising to us and I suspect to everyone else,” Kashlinsky said. “For some particular models of inflation you would expect these kinds of structures, and there were some suggestions in the literature that were not taken seriously I think until now.”
The discovery could help scientists probe what happened to the universe before inflation, and what’s going on in those inaccessible realms we cannot see.
The researchers detail their findings in the Oct. 20 issue of the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Muslim sues Tesco over alcohol September 29, 2008

A Muslim said he is suing Tesco for religious discrimination because he was asked to handle crates of alcohol in a warehouse.
Mohammed Ahmed, 32, was employed at the supermarket giant’s Lichfield depot in September last year for a job that included transporting various goods on fork-lift trucks.
The Saudi Arabia national told a tribunal he had not been told when he started the job that he would be handling alcoholic drinks – a task he said was against his Islamic beliefs.
The situation came to a head in the run-up to Christmas last year, when more alcohol was ferried to the warehouse in preparation for the festive season.
Mr Ahmed, who moved to Derby in 2006, complained to Tesco in February, but claims he was treated unfairly as a result. After eight months working for the company, he left in protest.
The decision on his legal action, after a three-day employment tribunal held in Birmingham, is expected next week.
He said: “It’s in our religion that we are not allowed to handle alcohol. In the UK there’s equal opportunities that should protect me and my beliefs.
“I was asking for my rights. I am not saying I am a perfect person but there was a conflict with my beliefs.”
Tesco claimed Mr Ahmed was made aware at his induction that he would be handling alcohol, and that every effort was made to find him an alternative role in the warehouse. But the claimant, of Upper Dale Road, Normanton, claims he was victimised by managers because of his stance.
A Tesco spokesman said: “Cases like this are very rare as managers are trained to be culturally sensitive and have an ‘open door policy’ to staff for issues like this as everyone is welcome to work at Tesco.”

She should feel lucky the he wasn’t a gynecologist who was upset that he did not get paid for his IUD work!
Also, he has not been arrested? Are you kidding?
A woman suffered the freak nightmare of mouth surgery after her dentist burst into her home and yanked out her teeth.
The German dentist is now under investigation for assault and theft after performing the surgury because the woman had not paid him.
According to police, the dentist form Bavarian town of Neu-Ulm barged into the womans house, tied her up, forced her mouth open and yanked out the two dental bridges that he had previously put in.
The work that he had perviously perfomed on the 35-year-old woman came to £320, but after her company’s insurance refused to settle the bill, he took matters into his own hands.
Although he has not been arrested, he could face discipline from both the health insurance company and the dental association.
“The dentist is being investigated for assault for the way he forced open her mouth, and theft for taking the bridges,” said Christian Owsinski a police spokesman.
“The woman was in pain when she showed up at the police station.”

WTF? Broke down AFTER landing! these people were VERY lucky it did not break down before landing!
“a picture is worth a thousand words”
Anyone who has ever used budget airlines know only too well how uncomfortable it can be: long queues, cramped seats and every tiny extra costs you.
But at least they are never told to get out and help push their plane.
That is exactly what happened to a group of passengers in China who were asked to get out and push after their plane broke down shortly after landing.
Hugh Hefner to sack Playboy bunnies amid financial crisis September 27, 2008

OMG as the kids say. Things are bad, bunnies let go? I guess the good news is that if you saved any money bunnies are now more affordable! I wish I could get an interest only loan for one, when I lose interest no more loan! Ouch, harsh, but the bunny life is one of naked reality.
Playboy bunnies have become the latest victim of the credit crunch.
Tycoon Hugh Hefner has been advised to cut back on staff at his multi-million dollar glamour empire as it struggles to cope during the global economic turmoil.
The 83-year-old has been told to lay off some of his staff at his Los Angeles and New York offices as soon as this month or go bankrupt.
The company has recently seen shares fall from £6.20 to £1.55.
An insider at the company told the Daily Star that bosses had been aware of the worsening situation for “a while”.
“Only the top brass has known for a while how bad things have been for Hef recently.”
Spokeswoman Elizabeth Austin would not confirm the sackings, saying: “It is our policy not to comment on corporate matters such as employee issues.”
The news will be another blow to Hefner who recently discovered that two of his “bunnies” may have been cheating on him.
Holly Madison, who has previously been named as Hefner’s “No.1″ girlfriend, is alleged to have had an affair with magician Criss Angel and another bunny, Kendra Wilson, is reportedly dating football star Hank Baskett.
Playboy spokesman Rob Hillburger denied the rumours, saying: “The rumours that Holly left Hef for Criss Angel are not true. Holly and Kendra are all still living at the Mansion.”
Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson September 26, 2008

LEt me see if I understand this correctly? Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson two year ago left the company he worked for to work for the government. He now wants the government to give 700 BILLION dollars to him to give to the company he worked for, with no questions asked? AND he is only going to be in his current government job for four more months. Where do you think he is going when he leaves? That’s right, back to his old company.
Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is not pleading for the country, the economy, or the american people. He is trying to pull the greatest swindle in wall street history! If he does this there will be 1 or 2 billion dollars waiting for him when he gets back to his old job.
Nice work if you can get it.
Florida Congressman: Palin ‘Don’t Care Too Much What They Do With Jews and Blacks’ September 26, 2008

All I can say is if Alcee Hastings was white and conservative she would be gone from congress!
Just imagine a white conservative saying at the panel discussion sponsored by the National Jewish Democratic Council, “the last man that was swept into office as the savior of a nation was Adolf Hitler and I don’t need to tell you how much he cared about Jews!”
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/09/florida-congres.html
ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports: Florida Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings pointed to Sarah Palin on Wednesday to rally Jews to Obama.
“If Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention,” said Hastings. “Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through.”
Hastings, who is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, made his comments in Washington, D.C., while participating in a panel discussion sponsored by the National Jewish Democratic Council.
Asked what the congressman meant, Hastings spokesman David Goldenberg told ABC News that he was trying to argue that Palin is an “extremely conservative woman who is out of touch with mainstream America.”
After saying that Palin “don’t care too much” about Jews and blacks, Hastings argued that African Americans and Jews should come together behind Obama because there are many issues on which they agree.
“Just like Jews, blacks care about affordable health care, energy independence, and the separation of church and state,” said Hastings. “And just like blacks, Jews care about equal pay for equal work, investment in alternative energy, and a woman’s right to choose.”
Asked about the Hastings criticism, Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella said, “We’re taking a pass.”
The Florida GOP responded to Wednesday’s panel discussion by calling on Obama to repudiate Hastings.
“Unless Senator Obama and the Florida Democrat Party believes that ‘anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks,’ both Obama and the FDP should immediately refute this ridiculous and divisive statement.”
When contacted by ABC News on Thursday afternoon, the Obama campaign had no response to the Florida GOP.
Train crushes railway sex couple? September 25, 2008

I wonder if anyone said to them, “Why don’t you F n die!”
If you hear a train coming, the rule is fuck and roll. Also good for putting out a fire.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7629433.stm
A couple in South Africa who were having sex on a railway track in
Mpumalanga Province have been killed by a goods train, police say.
Spokesman Abie Khoabane said it took place on Friday evening and the victims were yet to be identified.
He told local newspapers that the couple ignored the driver’s shouts as
he moved the train into the disused station in Kinross town.
“They continued with their business,” he told the Sowetan paper.
According to South Africa’s Beeld newspaper, the area was deserted with no cars or houses nearby.
The man died at the scene and the woman died later at hospital, the Sowetan reports.
The police have appealed for those with missing relatives to come forward to help with their investigation.
